Not that the Ringgit is rising, only the Dollar is falling, you BN fools

Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Asian currencies from the Indian rupee to the Chinese yuan are rising at a record pace as central banks turn to the foreign-exchange markets for help in fighting inflation.

The rupee's 11 percent gain this year is its biggest since 1974 and surpassed the predictions of all 26 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News at the start of 2007. The yuan has climbed 3.8 percent, its fastest appreciation since China ended a peg to the dollar in 2005. The Singapore dollar has reached a 10-year high after its biggest monthly gain since 2001.

By allowing their currencies to strengthen, Asian countries are attempting to reduce the cost of importing coal, iron ore and wheat, ingredients essential to their booming economies. The risk is that the goods they produce may become too expensive. In China, consumer prices rose 6.5 percent in August, the most since 1997. Singapore consumer prices hit a 12-year high in August, and India's inflation rate this year reached the highest since 2005.

``Asian central banks are balancing tremendous pressure from exporters to keep exchange rates cheap while keeping an eye on inflation,'' said Kenneth Rogoff, an economics professor at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund. ``They must let their currencies go before they suffer too much from inflation.''

Some members of the Group of Seven industrialized nations, including the U.S. and Germany, may propose a coordinated effort to boost Asian currencies at their meeting in Washington starting Oct. 19, Rogoff said. European Union Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia on Oct. 12 said China should allow its currency to appreciate more against the euro.

Asian central banks are finding that raising interest rates and selling debt aren't enough to soak up the cash that generates higher wages and fuels inflation, said Lawrence Goodman, head of emerging market foreign-exchange strategy at Bank of America Corp. in New York.

``The response will be stronger currencies because they'll buy fewer dollars,'' Goodman said.

The People's Bank of China increased rates five times this year, while the Reserve Bank of India has boosted its target seven times in two years. China's money supply still has expanded more than 18 percent in the last three months. Salaries in India will climb an average of 14.5 percent in 2007, the most in Asia for the second year in a row, according to Hewitt Associates Inc., a Chicago-based human resources company.

DAP says Ipoh Barat also sees increase in voters

The DAP has discovered an influx of new voters in another one of its parliamentary seats, secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said.

He said checks showed here was a sudden increase of 1,835 voters in the Ipoh Barat seat held by DAP vice-chairman M. Kulasegaran.

Guan Eng said the new voters in Ipoh Barat exceeded Kulasegaran’s majority in the 2004 general election, where he defeated Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Ho Cheong Sing with 596 votes.

Guan Eng claimed that on top of this increase, voters which were deemed supporters of the DAP had been transferred out of Taman Silibin in Ipoh Barat to the Batu Gajah parliamentary constituency.

The Batu Gajah seat is currently held by DAP Wanita organising secretary Fong Po Kuan.

On Tuesday (Oct 9), Guan Eng revealed that the Ipoh Timur parliamentary constituency held by his father, Parliamentary Opposition Leader Lim Kit Siang, had swelled by 8,463 new voters in three months.

Among others, the party had queried the sudden increase of 3,208 postal voters in the constituency even though there are no new army camps or police stations in the area.

Guan Eng reported that Election Commission (EC) chairman Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman had explained to the party on Monday (Oct 8) that the transfer of voters to Ipoh Timur was to rectify what had not been done in the last general election and that the commission was legally empowered to do so.

Guan Eng said today the party was also investigating if a similar transfer of voters had occurred in its other parliamentary and state seats.

Ipoh Barat, Ipoh Timur and Batu Gajah are the three parliamentary seats in Perak held by the DAP. The party has nine other parliamentary seats and 20 state seats.

Election watchdog Bersih said electoral roll integrity was one of the most important elements in an election.

"A tainted electoral roll will render an election illegal and illegitimate," it said in a statement today.

It demanded for the EC to investigate and rectify the problem or risk losing its credibility as an efficient and transparent institution.

When contacted, PAS said it was not aware of any voter increase in the 36 state and seven parliamentary seats it has held since 2004.

Its secretary-general Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar said the party’s concern was phantom voters, especially in Kelantan and Terengganu.

"We are at the moment watching Kelantan," he added.

MOSCOW - A Soyuz craft carrying the international space station's first female commander and Malaysia's first space traveler docked Friday at the orbital outpost after a two-day trip from Russia's launch facility in Kazakhstan.

The spacecraft docked on schedule automatic pilot, Russian Mission Control spokesman Valery Lyndin said. It carried the station's new American commander, astronaut Peggy Whitson of Beaconsfield, Iowa, as well as veteran Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor of Malaysian.

"Everything is great," Malenchenko told Mission Control shortly after the docking, which took place about 220 miles over Central Asia. A NASA commentator called it "flawless."

After hatches were opened, the three entered the station, Lyndin said.

Sheikh Muszaphar, 35, has said his roughly 10-day stay on the station should inspire his southeast Asian nation, and Muslims all over the world.

He will perform experiments involving diseases and the effects of microgravity and space radiation on cells and genes.

The $25 million agreement for a Malaysian astronaut to fly to space was negotiated in 2003 along with a $900 million deal for Malaysia to buy 18 Russian fighter jets.

At the moment the Soyuz-FG rocket blasted off from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Wednesday, "Malaysia became a member of the space community," a Malaysian representative at Mission Control said.

Whitson, 47, is making her second trip to the station and will become its first female commander.

She and Malenchenko will replace two of the station's current crew, cosmonauts Fyodor Yurchikhin and Oleg Kotov, who are slated to return to Earth along with Sheikh Muszaphar on Oct. 21 in a Soyuz capsule.

Whitson and Malenchenko, 45, who is on his second voyage to the station and who commanded Russia's Mir space station more than a decade ago, are to be joined later this month by U.S. astronaut Daniel Tani, who is scheduled to arrive on the space shuttle Discovery. Tani will replace fellow American Clayton Anderson, who has been at the station since June.

Anderson, a fan of the University of Nebraska football team, tossed a football in zero gravity before the new crew came aboard NASA video showed.

After Tani's arrival, the station's crew — known as Expedition 16 — will be busy with crucial jobs preparing for expansion of the station, which is set to add European and Japanese modules in the coming months.

Discovery will bring up a connecting mode called Harmony, and the station's crew will perform spacewalks to put it in place for a December shuttle docking and the arrival of the European module, Columbus, NASA's space operations chief Bill Gerstenmaier told a news conference at Mission Control.

Rare blue diamond smashes auction record

A rare, flawless blue diamond has been snapped up at a Sotheby's sale for US$7.98 million, making it the most expensive gemstone in the world per carat ever bought at auction.

The Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond Ring broke the auction record which had stood for 20 years, according to a Sotheby's spokeswoman, fetching US$1.32 million for each of it 6.04 carats.

The price for the emerald-cut piece smashed the record held by the Hancock Red, a red diamond which was sold for US$926,000 per carat, Sotheby's said.

Monday's purchase - which was clinched by Moussaieff Jewellers in London, a specialist in rare stones - was part of the auction house's autumn Hong Kong sale, which includes Chinese ceramics and contemporary art.

The entire jewel sale fetched US$40.84 million, including US$2.64 million for the "Irving Berlin" emerald, a long 47.60 carat necklace previously owned by the celebrated US composer and lyricist. - AFP
