Anger at Bolehland 'Jesus cartoon'
BBC News, Kuala Lumpur ![]()
A Malaysian newspaper is facing calls to shut down after it published an image of Jesus holding a cigarette and what appeared to be a can of beer.
Malaysia's Muslim-led government closed two publications last year for carrying controversial cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
Now some members of Malaysia's minority religions say they want the same treatment over this latest incident.
Religion is a famously sensitive subject in Malaysia.
So when Tamil-language newspaper, Makkal Osai, published a picture on its front page apparently showing Jesus smoking and drinking it was bound to cause offence.
Christian groups said that although the Jesus of the Bible was a compassionate figure - who turned water into wine, shared a flagon with his disciples at the Last Supper and mixed with tax collectors and prostitutes - action should still be taken.
The paper has since issued an apology, explaining that a graphics editor had mistakenly taken the image from the internet. Most of Malaysia's churches appear to have been appeased.
Not so though the Malaysian Indian Congress, an ethnic Tamil political party in the governing coalition, most of whose members are Hindu.
A senior party official has demanded that Makkal Osai's editor be sacked and the paper closed.
Interestingly, Makkal Osai has been very critical of the Malaysian Indian Congress, which owns a rival Tamil-language newspaper.
Non-Muslims are also waiting to see how the government responds, given that it took tough action over the publication of the Prophet Muhammad cartoons.

Will this able to halt global stocks selldown?
Aug. 17 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve unexpectedly cut the discount rate and said it's prepared to take further action to "mitigate'' damage to the economy from the rout in global credit markets.
The central bank reduced the rate at which the Fed makes direct loans to banks by 0.5 percentage point to 5.75 percent. Policy makers kept their benchmark federal funds rate target unchanged at 5.25 percent. Today's action is the first reduction in borrowing costs between scheduled meetings of the Federal Open Market Committee since 2001 and Ben S. Bernanke's first as Fed chairman.
``Financial market conditions have deteriorated, and tighter credit conditions and increased uncertainty have the potential to restrain economic growth,'' the FOMC said in a statement released in Washington. ``The downside risks have increased appreciably.''

Foulers to be Forced Off?
English referees want fouling players to be forced to stand on the touchline until the player they have injured is fit to carry on.
At the moment the transgressor's team gains an advantage as they carry on playing with 11 while the injured player's side is reduced to ten men.
That could change if England's elite referees can push through a change to the Laws of the Game. They will take their proposal first to the FA and then to the International Football Association Board, who have the power to change the laws.
The change could not be pushed through for this season but it could be introduced at Euro 2008.
"It's wrong that the opponent who committed the foul challenge remains on the pitch and his team stays at 11, yet the team who has been offended against go down to 10 for a period while the player is treated," said Keith Hackett, the chief executive of the Professional Game Match Officials, in the Daily Telegraph.
"If it is an injury that demands touchline treatment, he [the injured player] comes off and the offender comes off. When he is fit, or a substitute is ready, he [the offender] can come back on."
[It is a fantastic idea!]

Negarakuku in Malay translation
Negarakuku
Saya cintai negaraku
Ada negara baru ada keluarga
Ada keluarga baru ada saya
Berdiri di sini nyanyi lagu untuk mu
Kau jangan takut
Walau setiap kali aku bercakap kasar
Lagu aku macam durian yang keras berduri
Cuma tengok berani tak kau membuka
Lihat apa yang sebenar di dalamnya
Ia boleh berbau busuk ataupun berbau wangi
Cuma tengok kau ada apa macam punya lubang hidung
Polis kita dipanggil Mata
Kerana mata mereka sungguh tajam
Menjelang tahun baru mereka sangat rajin bekerja
Pegang pen tapi jarang tulis saman
Secawan kopi jadi hubungan kita tak menjadi tawar (longgar)
Aku sangat suka
Sekurang-kurangnya takkan terima saman bila balik rumah
Bapaku tentu akan “Tulan” (marah)
Saya tentu “Kiam Kan” (kena marah)
Tiada kereta bagi aku bawa
Macam mana
Kali ini teruklah
Tiada kereta macam mana aku keluar bersuka ria
Tiada kereta macam mana aku berasmara di luar
Tiada kereta macam mana aku pergi tengok pondan
Negara ini aku sangat suka
Lima pagi ada morning call panggil aku bangun
Kadang kala beberapa buah nyanyi bersama-sama
Bila dengar bagaikan nyanyi lagu cinta
Suara berputar-putar macam nyanyi R&B
Kadang kala mereka nyanyi sampai suara lari (dari pitching)
Kadang kala mereka nyanyi sampai suara serak
Ada yang suara macam ayam jantan
Tapi bangun lebih awal daripada ayam jantan
Macam ini kami baru tahu tiba masa untuk belajar dan bekerja
Jangan salah kerajaan hanya menjaga bumiputera
Jangan salah kerajaan kita tidak dilayan dengan saksama
Ini baru dapat buktikan kita orang Cina tak takut hidup menderita
Ini baru dapat melatih kita cari jalan keluar dari dilema
Jangan rasa standard mereka ganjil sangat
Mereka buat apa-apa pun lambat sangat
Biarpun sampai orang yang tunggu berbaris maki “Cau Lelai”
Mood mereka masih relaks sahaja
Kadang kala ambil kuih keluar
Dia makan kuihnya
Kau terus berbaris sahaja
Biarpun kau maki “Cau Lelai” pun tak apa
Kerana pegawal sedang mimpi di sebelah
Dia takkan marah kau punya
Mereka bungkus kepala
Jalan perlahan-lahan melintas jalan
Kalau kau berlalu mesti beri laluan
Yang penting hidup dengan gembira
Yang penting hidup dengan selesa
Jangan macam orang Cina
Sibuk sepanjang masa
Begitu susah payah
Semangat macam ini mesti kita sanjungi
Kerana inilah sikap hidup mereka
Lagu ini aku hanya cakap yang baik-baik sahaja
Aku percaya kau yang Tulan (benci) aku sekarang mestilah suka
Dunia sungguh aman
Penuh dengan harapan
Tiada orang cedera
Tiada huru-hara
Kau sungguh suci
Kau sungguh anggun
Tahi berbau wangi
Tak maki-maki kasar
Kau paling berkelas tinggi
Tiap-tiap hari romantik
Dengar lagu Guang Liang Pin Guan
Tapi mereka pun dah pergi ke Taiwan
Pelajar Sekolah Menengah Persendirian Cina yang tamat pelajaran
Sungguh susah nak masuk universiti tempatan
Tapi kita tak perlu rasa “Tulan” (benci)
Kerana ini rancangan kerajaan yang gagah
Ia mau kita pergi ke sana sini
Keluar negeri cari harapan sendiri
Lalu menimba ilmu dan membalas negara ini
Rancangan ini begitu sempurna
Di merata-rata dunia dapat jumpa anak-anak Malaysia
Macam lari daripada malap petaka
Sungguh syoknya
2007 Tahun Lawat Malaysia
Semua budaya Cina dibawa keluar untuk publisiti
Sekolah Menengah Persendirian Cina kerajaan sedikit pun tak mau peduli
Sijil dibuang ke dalam longkang
Macamlah aku tamat persekolahan menengah pergi ke Taiwan
Menimba ilmu sedia pulang membalas negara
Berdiri di tepi jalan Taipei aku bermain gitar
Tapi mulut aku tetap bernyanyi

Reply to Sagaladoola
The petition appeared in Straits Times Singapore.
Besides, do you think we can change the government by voting? People tried in 1969 and it failed. So, why is it that people still vote? Chicken and egg issue.
[i think both of us agreed we can't change the nation through voting. Yes, the Opposition came close in 1969. in 1986, DAP again came close to capture Penang]
Do you think the police will investigate the police reports by Ronnie Liu and Tony Pua? If you think "yes", I thank you for your faith. If "no", then why do these people lodge the police reports in the first place? Another chicken and egg issue.
[OK, now this statement of yours really made you missed my point. Ronnie's report was different than this online petition. Ronnie's just wanted to tell everyone there is double standard in the police force. He's not expecting any action to be taken against Pak Helah. He just wanted to imply that if no action were to be taken against Pak Helah, then there should be no action against RPK too.]
The government used to "not care" about blogging. Even today, some of my friends think government won't care about the things that bloggers write. I am not sure about you. Why is it that the government is so cautious about bloggers, now?
[Again, i think both of us share the same opinion of bloggers are the main threat to UMNO-led govt at the moment.]
Do you think Opposition will be able to table and move motions in the Parliament? Currently, most (or is it not, all?) of the motions tabled by Opposition for the good of the nation have been rejected. Why is it that the Opposition Leader Lim Kit Siang keep on tabling motions even when he knows most (or is it all?) of his motions will be rejected? Chicken and egg issue.
[We both know very well Lim Kit Siang's motions all been rejected. None of it had been successful so far. Uncle Kit already stated it very clearly in his blog.]
Do you think with the current situation that we are in, Oppositions like PAS, DAP, PKR can rule the nation? Every party here is regarded by the citizens as either religious or racial party. Most of the time, one group of the community will not vote the other. If these parties can't rule the country, why do they still exist? Why do the citizens still vote and trust in them? Chicken and egg issue.
[No single political party could rule Bolehland. PAS,DAP,PKR will not be able to achieve >50% of parliamentary seats alone. Same goes to UMNO too. Parties that cannot rule by itself will have to form an alliance.]
Just like we still vote, still table motions, still blog and still question, we should still try the petition. I do not see anything wrong with that.
[Well, this is what i am talking about! If you want to make a petition, make sure that petition will not be thrown into the garbage bin IMMEDIATELY!
By asking UMNO to take action against Mat Tyson, what is the best odd you can get? Mat Tyson now is doing UMNO a big, big favour by discrediting the bloggers. You yourself have rightly pointed out above - bloggers are main threat to UMNO, and with Mat Tyson doing a great job for UMNO at the moment, Mat Tyson will most likely be rewarded rather than be punished. If he is not going to be punished, then what's the purpose of the petition?? Get real on this. Will you go to the bandit leader to tell him his that bandit gang just robbed you? Will you go and tell Musa Hassan one of the traffic policeman just asked you for RM20?]
I choose to at least do something about it. The least effort of all, to sign a petition, blog and at least disseminate important information to my friends.
[My advice is when petition has been overused, it serves no purpose in the future. Think about it again. I dont wish to see petition to suffer the same fate as dato, tan sri titles etc. Petition should be used as a last resort.]
I will not sit and not wait and not think everything will not work and not do nothing about it.
[Same as me too, but at least i do it in a meaningful way - by joining the right party. By dishing out meaningless petitions everywhere, will get you nowhere in the end]

Hogwash from our so-called market analysts
KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia should be able to withstand the fallout of the sell-down on regional markets that was triggered by the US subprime mortgage crisis, analysts said. CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets said Malaysia had no direct exposure to the subprime woes in the US while there was also ample local liquidity to cushion foreign selling in the Malaysian stock market. Describing Malaysia as a “safe haven in the subprime storm”, it said Malaysia should weather global concerns better than before given a stronger domestic backdrop currently. [What a load of crap in trying to mislead the public to put in money into a 3rd world country!]

Carlos Tevez finally allowed to join Man Utd
1984: Born February 5 in Buenos Aires. 2001: November - Makes first-team debut for Boca Juniors. Wins two Argentinian titles, two Libertadores Cup titles and the World Club Championship with Boca in 2003. 2004: March - Makes senior debut for Argentina in a World Cup qualifier against Ecuador. December - Joins Brazilian side Corinthians in an 18 million US dollars (£8.9million) deal, a record between South American clubs. The deal is financed by Media Sports Investments, a group of investors headed by Kia Joorabchian who also own a controlling stake in Corinthians. 2005: Helps Corinthians to the Brazilian title and named the competition's best player. 2006: June 16 - Scores as Argentina thrash Serbia and Montenegro 6-0 as the South Americans give a World Cup masterclass in their opening first-round match in Gelsenkirchen. August 31 - Makes shock move to England, joining West Ham along with Corinthians club-mate and international team-mate Javier Mascherano. September 4: Hammers deny they are contractually obliged to play Tevez and Mascherano in every game. September 10: Draw 1-1 with Aston Villa, Tevez making his debut off the bench. 2007: March 2 - West Ham are charged by the Premier League for breaching their rules in relation to the signings of Tevez and Mascherano in August. March 4: Tevez scores first goal for West Ham in 4-3 defeat to Tottenham. April 27: West Ham are fined £5.5million but spared a points deduction after pleading guilty. The verdict also rules "the registration of Carlos Tevez can be terminated by the FA Premier League" but Tevez is later cleared to play on for the Hammers. May 13: Tevez scores the winning goal in 1-0 defeat to Manchester United which ensures West Ham avoid relegation. July 9: Sir Alex Ferguson confirms he expects a deal for Tevez to be completed when the Argentinian returns from Cope America duty, despite fears that the Premier League might delay the transfer. July 24: FIFA recommend the Tevez case to be referred to Court of Arbitration for Sport after deciding not to become involved. However, Kia Joorabchian opts to issue High Court proceedings against West Ham. August 3: West Ham have confirmed they have reached a £2million settlement with Carlos Tevez's representatives which will allow the Argentinian to leave the club. Tevez is expected to join Manchester United shortly.

Yen Jumps as Hedge Fund Losses
Aug. 1 (Bloomberg) -- The yen jumped against the euro and the dollar as hedge fund losses and a slump in stocks prompted investors to cut investments paid for by loans in Japan.
Traders pared so-called carry trades, pushing up the yen versus the 16 most-active currencies. The Australian and New Zealand dollars, whose high interest rates are a magnet to investors, were among the biggest decliners against the yen. Asian and European equities also dropped on speculation of further fund losses tied to U.S. subprime mortgages.
``The financial community has been complacent on risk and we have to reconsider our view,'' said Pierre Lequeux, head of currency management at ABN Amro Asset Management, which oversees $1 billion in foreign exchange. ``This is just the beginning, there's more to come. People are already unwinding carry trade positions.''
The yen earlier touched 160.50 per euro, the strongest since April 24, before trading at 160.74 at 9:18 a.m. in London from 162.30 late in New York yesterday. It climbed to 117.82 per dollar from 118.61, strengthening beyond 118 for the first time since April 19. The yen advanced 2.7 percent last month versus the euro, the most since February 2006, and 3.8 percent against the dollar, the biggest increase since October 2004.
